Q: What is the goal of Heritage Builders?
A: To get parents, in particular dads, to be intentional about
giving their children a Godly Heritage. This is accomplished through
every day living, based on Deuteronomy 11:19 "Teach them (Truths) to your
children, talking about them when you sit in your house and when you walk
along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." This verse
implies that passing on a Godly Heritage is done most effectively through
everyday living. Heritage Builders provides the tools for you to do
this; you need to supply the desire to obey God in teaching your children.
Q: What is the first step in incorporating
this in my family?
A: If you are new to Heritage Builders, the first step would be to
purchase our Family Starter Kit for $39.50. The tools that come with
this kit provide you with everything you will need, except your
willingness to incorporate the principles. You should also listen to
the two "Introduction" messages
here.
Q: What are some of the things you do in
incorporating this in the family?
A: One of the first things is to start a once-a-week Family Night.
This lasts from 20 to 60 minutes, depending on you and your kids.
You would choose an activity for Family Night out of one of our Family
Night workbooks. For an example of a Family Night lesson, click
here.
During these lessons, you will instill in your children various object
lessons that they will remember. But there are a couple other key
components to Heritage Builders. After you read Your Heritage,
you will understand that you need to provide for your children, not only
spiritually, but also emotionally and socially. Here are the books
that help you do that: Family Compass gives practical,
intentional ways to pass Godly values on to your child; the book Family
Fragrance shows you how to fill your home with the AROMA (Affection,
Respect, Order, Merriment, Affirmation) of love. Family
Traditions will help you strengthen your family's identity; and
Extending Your Heritage teaches you how to influence your family and
beyond (your students, your grandchildren, your neighborhood kids).
Q: As a pastor, how can I implement this in my
church?
A: Great question! We believe that we strengthen God's Family,
by strengthening the individual family. You are the shepherd for not
only your biological family, but also your congregational family.
There are many families hurting and need tools to help them train their
children. We have three options for implementing this in your
church. Prices are very reasonable; and the plans to implement them
are very flexible. We have trained Instructors that can assist you
in the implementation. Keep in mind however, that this is not a
"program" like the "Purpose Driven" model. We would rather
consider this to be a "Family Focused" model. Not that Scriptures
are not our focus, rather because Scriptures are the foundation, families
become our focus. Throughout the Scriptures, believers are referred
to as being a part of a
family.
In addition, as you look for leaders within your church, you will rightly turn
to 1 Timothy 3 for guidelines. In verses 4 and 5, Paul tells Timothy
to look for those who manage their household competently, having his
children under control with all dignity. We believe that if a dad cares enough to
make his family a priority, he is on his way to fulfilling the elder
requirements (assuming of course that he fulfills the other elder
parameters). This becomes a great way for potential leaders to
identify themselves.
Also, we do not feel that it is the church's responsibility to
train the children; rather, we believe it is the church's responsibility
to train the parents on how to train their children. A trend
has been started where parents abdicate the responsibility to train their
children to the church or to the Christian school; however, we do not
believe that this is what Deuteronomy 6:7 is telling us. This verse
tells the fathers to teach their children. The church and school
should reinforce what the parents are teaching at home. Heritage
Builders provides the tools for the parents to do this.
By the way, our Family Night workbooks work great as Sunday school
curriculum. You would teach the lesson the same as you do in your
biological family, only for this format you would teach it to your Sunday
school "family". For adult Sunday school, the Building a Heritage
curriculum is fantastic at teaching all of the Heritage Building
principles. It can be taught in a 10 to 13 week format.
